Wolfberry
Wolfberry (Lycium Barbarum L.) is a small red berry that is known as wolfberry in the West and Goji throughout Asia and has been used as a dietary staple for thousands of years in Northern China, where people are known for their longevity.
Goji berries are a concentrated food and may be beneficial to strengthen the immune system in times of colds, viruses, digestive problems and other forms of compromised health. Wolfberry (Goji) berries are a most valuable source of alkaline healing and cleansing minerals. The magnesium content of goji berries promotes alkalinity.
Vital Greens now has a potentised extract which further enhances the therapeutic effects of Wolfberry.
Aspects and aeas where Wolfberry is particularly beneficial include:
Modulation Unity, Anti-Cancer and Anti-Oxidant
Polysaccharides are the main active component of interest in the Wolfberry. They modulate immunity and are anti-oxidant. Wolfberry, high in polysaccharides, increases the antibody reaction to T-cell dependant antigen. This process strengthens T-cell immune response, helping the body to fight against cancer, other diseases and infection.
Beta-Carotene
Beta-carotene and other carotenoids in Wolfberry provide essential nutrients for the eyes. Wolfberry has as much beta carotene as carrots.
Amino Acids
Wolfberry contains 19 amino acids including all 8 essential amino acids (amino acids which must be obtained from food). More than half of the amino acids are free or water soluble, and can be directly utilized by the body.
Trace Elements
Besides the above three main nutrients, wolfberry also has about 21 trace minerals, fiber, protein (about 11%- 13%), Betaine, Flavonoids, 29 fatty acids, niacin, Vitamins A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, nearly as much Vitamin C as oranges, as much protein as bee pollen and in addition, it contains Calcium, Fiber, Phosphorus, Iron, Carotene and Nicotinic Acid.
Anti-Aging
There is some impressive studies that shows Wolfberry to be extremely effective as an anti-aging compound.
Increase White Blood Cells
The Chinese have traditionally used Wolfberry to improve visual acuity, headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, energy and insomnia. Recent studies have added many new benefits to an already impressive list of attributes. Testing at the Ningxia Institute of Drug Inspection has shown the use of Wolfberry increases the white blood cells that protect the organs of the excretory system especially the liver and the kidneys.
Anti-Obesity
Some studies have shown Wolfberry to have some anti-obesity properties as well as helping those with diabetes. It is also widely believed in China to increase sexual fluids and enhance fertility.
Lowers Total and LDL Cholesterol Levels
The branched-chain amino acid, L-leucine, is present in high quantities in Wolfberry. The body converts this amino acid into a powerful compound, beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate (HMB). HMB lowers total and LDL cholesterol levels in the blood, strengthen the immune system and helps build muscles while burning body fat. Athletes and body builders should benefit from the use of this product as well as those suffering with AIDS, cancer and muscular dystrophy.
Footnote
Be aware that many goji berry products, like juice, use poor quality ingredients that have high pesticide levels - ddt is still used in parts of china. Ask your supplier if their products are tested in Australia.
